DEBUTS Israel |
Eurovision lost its innocence in 1973. The
Munich Olympic massacre and it's fallout meant that suddenly
high profile events like the contest were seen as a potential
target for terrorists, a mood heightened when Israel made their
Eurovision debut this year. The contest has always been open to
active broadcasters within the European Broadcasting Union, and
this body has long included nations from Europe's fringe.
Israel would go on to be one of the most successful countries in
contest history and kicked off with a strong fourth place. The contest
itself was held under suffocating security, the
audience were told not to stand up during the contest or they
may be shot!.
Anne-Marie David produced a narrow second
consecutive victory for the Grand Duchy, squeezing past Spain
and the UK. The runner-up song "Eres Tu" by Mocedades
went on to become a huge international hit, even conquering the
American top ten, and "Power To All Our Friends" brought Sir
Cliff Richard a second podium place and another chart hit at a
fallow period in his career. The language rule was lifted
and Scandinavia leapt at the chance to sing in English, their
three songs finishing fifth, sixth and seventh, led by the
Swedish entry which had been controversially selected over
Abba's "Ring Ring" and contained one of Eurovision's all time
immortal lines: "Your breasts are like swallows a-nesting".
This is why we love Eurovision.
Nicole and Hugo finally sang for
Belgium. They were due to sing in 1971 but Nicole was ill, and we
were left to wonder what sartorial delights we were spared in
Dublin as they spun around the stage
in their purple bellbottoms. Disco starlet in the making
Patrick Juvet sang 'Je Vais Me Marier Marie'. Five years later he loved
America but in 1973 he carried the colours of his native Switzerland. Another Swiss wannabe, one of
their jurors (on camera), really hammed it up when displaying his
votes. He may or may not have been the reason why this type of voting was
abandoned after this year.
