1983
VENUE

Rudi Sedlmayer Halle, Munich

ENTRIES

HOST

Marlene Charell

DEBUTS

None

Star of the show was definitely the presenter Marlene Charell. Now, after a few contests where two presenters had been used, you would have thought they would have shared the workload, because poor old Marlene really earned her crust that night. Not only did she have to employ a third language on the voting (German, obviously), but she also participated in the the interval ballet routine!

For the first time in seventeen years (and under the current scoring system) two songs scored nul-points, and as in 1966 they were performed consecutively.  Turkey's Cetin Alp delivered a bizarre entry, somewhat lacking in the lyric department, devoted to the joys of opera and Spain's Remedios Amaya sang a dour downbeat flamenco entry that was too ethnic for it's own good and quite at odds with Eurovision pappety pop a la 1983 style.

In retrospect, it's now sad to witness this contest again, as two of the most successful performers met tragic ends. One of the German Hoffman brotheres took his own life, and Israel's great Ofra Haza passed away with a HIV-related illness.  Corinne Hermes squeaked to victory in a very tight result  giving Luxembourg the last of its five victories, third placed Carola returned to win the contest eight years later and the UK entry featured Carrie Grant who would go on to be a serial casting show vocal coach.
