VENUE

Scandinavium, Gothenburg

ENTRIES

HOST

Lill Lindfors

The thirtieth contest was quite remarkable for the reappearance of so many previous entrants. Is Eurovision such a niche area in the music business that just a small coterie of people bother to make an effort? This year, Denmark, Israel, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and Luxembourg all sent artists who had sung before. In addition to these, the German, Austrian, Danish and Turkish entrants would be back in later years. The most Euro-regular packed contest in history.

Izhar Cohen, 1978 champion returned without his Alpha-Beta backing and secured a strong top five result.  UK singer Vikki Watson finished one position higher and two decades on has lost the bouffant, gone all new age and is calling herself Aeone.  The winning act, Bobbysocks, was composed of two Eurovision ultra veteran divas: Elisabeth Andreassen was born in Sweden of Norwegian parentage, sang for Sweden in 1982 as part of Chips with a prototype of "La Det Swinge", then a decade after her win sang again for Norway in 1994 with Jan Werner Danielsen and in 1996 solo (when she was runner-up).  Partner Hanne Krogh sang solo for Norway in 1971 and as part of Just 4 Fun in 1991.

In many ways the night belonged to the presenter Lill Lindfors, who had been part of the duo that finished second in 1966. On returning to oversee the voting, she "accidentally" caught her skirt on part of the stage set; then proceeded to cleverly unpin a new skirt from her shoulders down. "I am so pleased you won because Norway has come last so many times". Lill spoke for many of us. In the Sixties and Seventies Norway sent several lovely quirky little songs and never got a fair result.  You can read more about it here
