An unforgettable start to the first contest of the Nineties. Ladies and gentlemen, Azucar Moreno from Spain bring you the first song of the bright new decade....oops!. The tape machine came on at the wrong point, and after a few seconds, the Spanish duo realised what had happened and stormed off, wringing their hands. Matters weren't helped though by their entry being one of the most vocal-light entries ever. Still they recovered composure and perhaps a bit of sympathy helped them to a top five ranking.

The twelve months since the last contest had brought unprecedented political change in Europe including the fall of the Berlin Wall, and even though the old Eastern Bloc countries were not yet eligible to compete, this years set of songs surpassed even 1979 for hymns to peace, love and understanding.  It all became a little tiresome, but clearly not for the juries as rank outsider Italy claimed an unlikely second victory with a song based around the refrain "Unite Unite Europe".

Finland submitted a song in Swedish (as one of their official languages). The song "Fri" by Beat has a unique place in history as the only song ever to be both performed last (historically perhaps the most favourable draw) AND finish last.  The UK thought they were on the money with a peace anthem sung by a teenager, but found themselves a year late for the teenie boom and (not for the last time) found that a dozen countries had the same bright idea songwise.
