The United Kingdom's record in the early decades
is without parallel; from 1959 to 1977 they only once finished
outside the top four! There was further success at the start of the
80s but this remarkable record couldn't go on forever and the UK
began slipping down the table (just a little) in the mid 80s.
Fortunes were restored with four second places in the space of
six years but several times in the 90s the UK was merely
mid-table. Success was sweet in 1997 and 1998 but the new
millennium brought a series of disastrous results (2002
excepting) culminating in "nul points" in 2003 and
only a moderate improvement the next few years.
